The English novelist Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) wrote about social issues affecting the working class and created strong female characters. This all-over cabled cardigan dedicated to her reflects the knitwear of the late 1800s. Unshaped, with low shoulders and a shawl collar, this type of cardigan was designed as menswear, but women quickly adopted it for themselves. Gaskell comes in two lengths, with the longer version also including pockets and a deep welt. The body is knitted in flat pieces before being joined at the shoulders. The boxy shape, dropped shoulders and deep sleeves make Gaskell perfect for layering over other pieces.
Gaskell is knitted using Susan Crawford Barn a DK weight, worsted spun yarn that is delightfully smooth and soft, created from a blend of Jacobs and Shetland fibres spun exclusively for us in a nearby Yorkshire mill.
Gaskell is shown here in two colour ways.
Colourway One uses shade: Tannin a deep gold with a hint of brown and Colourway Two uses shade Foggy Morning a warm grey with a hint of brown
The kits are available in six sizes to fit from 28-60 inch chest and two lengths as follows:
Kit Size One: To fit 1st & 2nd sizes (Short Length) (81-97cm / 32-38in) and 1st size (Long Length) (81-86cm 32-34in) and includes 7 X 100g skeins of hand-dyed Barn in colour of your choice.
Kit Size Two: To fit 3rd size (Short Length ) (102-107cm / 40-42in) and 2nd & 3rd sizes (Long Length) (92-107cm / 36-42in) and includes 8 X 100g skeins of hand-dyed Barn in colour of your choice.
Kit Size Three: To fit 4th & 5th sizes (Short Length) (112-127cm / 44-50in) and 4th size (Long Length) (112-117cm / 44-46in) and includes 9 X 100g skeins of hand-dyed Barn in colour of your choice.
Kit Size Four: To fit 6th size (Short Length) (132-142cm / 52-56in) and 5th size (Long Length) (122-127cm / 48-50in) and 142 to 157cm (56-62in) includes 10 X 100g skeins of hand-dyed Barn in colour of your choice.
