The Vintage Shetland Project

  • Yule is a recreation of a twentieth century sweater in the Shetland Museum archive and was recreated as part of The Vintage Shetland Project. Yule is a circular knit sweater with a fabulous all-over colourwork pattern created with a multitude of Shetland motifs. The original sweater was knitted by Shetlander, Katie Anderson, in the early 1940s for her nephew, Bob Yule. Bob kept the sweater throughout his lifetime before it was eventually donated to the Shetland Museum after his death.

Yule is knitted in the round from the bottom up commencing with a simple 1x1 ribbed welt after which the colourwork begins. Once the armholes are reached, steeks are added to continue working in the round. The sweater has slightly dropped shoulders for a relaxed fit. The shoulder seams are grafted together and finally a 1x1 ribbed turtle neck is worked.

The pattern includes instructions to knit Yule in a range of sizes to fit from 32-58 inch (81-147cm).

The same sample is shown in the photographs on two models with the male model illustrating the true vintage fit of the garment. To lengthen the sweater for a more contemporary fit, extra pattern repeats should be worked on the body and sleeves as required. When choosing a size I suggest you choose one with approximately 3-9cm (1.25 - 3.5in) of positive ease.

Yule is knitted using Fenella, my 2 ply vintage weight yarn, in six shades, and which perfectly recreates the gauge and finish of the original sweater.

A yarn kit is available to accompany this pattern.

The pattern contains full colour charts plus comprehensive written instructions as well as a clear schematic diagram.
