The body of the hat is knitted in stranded colourwork throughout, and is a great introduction to stranded colourwork and an enjoyable knit for more experienced Fair Isle knitters. I use the two-handed stranded colourwork method, holding one colour in each hand, picking the colour held in my left hand and throwing the colour held in my right.

Denby is the first Fair Isle design and the first accessory featured in my new book, [link: Evolution=:=/products/evolution :link], a collection of 12 designs inspired by [link: The Vintage Shetland Project=:=/products/the-vintage-shetland-project :link].

I found one of the motifs in Twageos particularly inspirational – an abstract 8-petal flower motif that seems distinctly reminiscent of the decoration found on Denby pottery; in particular the hand-sponged flowers on 1970s dinner sets. I decided to highlight this stunning motif by using it in isolation on Denby; working with just two shades across the entire hat, I further emphasised the drama of this striking pattern.

I have provided multiple variations in this one simple pattern, first of all by offering two colourway options: Colourway A uses cool 'pottery-esque' shades of [link: Excelana 4 Ply=:=/collections/excelana-4-ply :link] with [link: Himalayan Blue=:=/products/himalayan-blue :link] as the accent colour against the neutral background of [link: Limestone=:=/products/limestone :link]. Colourway B reverses this with neutral [link: Limestone=:=/products/limestone :link] as the foreground and with a darker shade, [link: Dark as Night=:=/products/dark-as-night :link], as the background. These two chart variations give lots of scope for trying different colour combinations. In addition the pattern offers two styles; a fitted beanie style or a longer, slouchy version. Choose the relevant chart for the hat length and colourway you wish to knit. These simple mittens are a great introduction to mitten knitting techniques.

The inspiration for Gallica is multifaceted — like most designs in reality, Inspired in part by Harriet, the charming pair of mittens in [link: The Vintage Shetland Project=:=/products/the-vintage-shetland-project :link]; the motifs on those mittens in turn inspired by the floral motifs popular in the late 1940s and early 1950s, just like the Rose Cardigan and indeed, [link: Floribunda=:=/products/pattern-floribunda :link]. Using one motif all-over the design was suggested to Susan by Stromfirth, the striking 'shooting' stockings from [link: The Vintage Shetland Project=:=/products/the-vintage-shetland-project :link]. These too use a floral inspired motif across the body and foot of the sock and use just two colours throughout. Susan decided to pare down the floral motif into a more abstract, cubist design but instead of only using two shades throughout, Susan used five.

The colour scheme was inspired by the gorgeous shades of the [link: Floribunda cardigan=:=/products/pattern-floribunda :link]. The colours of the cardigan were all hand dyed by Susan who discovered whilst dyeing those shades, that if she continued using the dye bath continuously without adding more dye it achieved the vibrant and glorious pink shade of [link: Gallica=:=/products/barn-gallica :link] and the almost apple-like shade of [link: Frond=:=/products/barn-frond :link]. Bordering these with their sister shades of [link: Rosehip=:=/products/barn-rosehip :link] and [link: Folius=:=/products/barn-folius :link] added depth and variation and created a wonderfully tonal surface pattern. These colours against the natural grey of the [link: Dry Stone Wall=:=/products/barn-drystonewall :link] gives the mittens a real vintage quality, a favourite pair of mittens found in the drawer of an old wooden cabinet.

The mittens are knitted in the round using DPNs, or magic loop could be used if preferred. The knitting commences with the cuff which is worked in striped corrugated ribbing as do many traditional Shetland knits. The main hand of the mitten is worked in standard stranded colour work with only ever two colours used on any one round and a maximum of 5 stitches in any one colour at a time. The thumb gusset is worked to the side of the mitten. Additional thumb gusset stitches are worked by knitting into the front and back of the stitches as shown in the charts. To ensure continuity of the pattern you may need to knit into the back of the stitch with a different colour than that used to knit into the front of the stitch. Be sure to follow the chart which indicates which shade to use for each part of the increase. The two mittens are knitted identically.

There are three mitten sizes each with its own chart and all the charts are read from right to left on every round. The lower body is worked in the round from the bottom up with a steek at centre front. Before commencing the lower body a ribbed facing is worked which is later turned under and sewn in place to create a firm edging to prevent stretch and distortion. Once the armholes have been reached the work is divided and extra steeks added at the armholes. The shoulders are grafted together and then the sleeves are knitted downwards finishing with a matching smaller motif to the welt and a small ribbed facing.
