The two colourways of the Gertrude vest were inspired by the work of Gertrude Jekyll, a garden designer who from 1881 until her death in 1932 designed more than 400 gardens. She pioneered the use of different colour schemes to create moods and atmosphere. Gertrude is a classic fitted vest featuring a Fair Isle-style pattern to the front and a corresponding check pattern to the back. The front neck has a low, round contour, reminiscent of 1970s tank tops. The vest knitted in the round from the bottom up. Steeks are added at the armhole and front neck.

Gertrude is knitted using Susan Crawford Byre, a fingering weight yarn that is delightfully lofty and soft, created from a blend of Jacobs and Shetland fibres spun exclusively for us in a nearby Yorkshire mill.

Gertrude is shown here in two colourways.

Colourway One which uses 11 shades:
with the main shade Heather plus 10 further shades - Dry Stone Wall, Clay, Moss Covered Wall, Room Of My Own, Ragwort, Undergrowth, Sunset Over The Bay, Plum Jam, Glimpse Of The Sea and Night Sky.

Colourway Two which uses 7 shades:
with the main shade of Denim plus 6 further shades - Jack 'O' Lantern, Rusty Tractor, Loam, Sunset Over The Bay, Glimpse Of The Sea and Fence Post.

There are eight yarn kits to choose from: Three for Colourway One and five for Colourway Two to fit a range of sizes from 71-157 cm (28-62 in) chest as follows:

Colourway One - Size One: To fit sizes 76 to 112cm (30-44in) chest, includes 1 X 100g skein of main shade plus 10 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.

Colourway One - Size Two: To fit size 117cm (46in) chest, includes 2 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 10 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.

Colourway One - Size Three: To fit sizes 122 to 152 cm (48-60in) chest, includes 2 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 11 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.

Colourway Two - Size One: To fit sizes 76 to 81cm (30-32in) chest, includes 1 X 100g skein of main shade plus 6 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.

Colourway Two - Size Two: To fit size 86cm (34in) chest, includes 1 X 100g skein of main shade plus 7 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.

Colourway Two - Size Three: To fit sizes 92-102cm (36-40in) chest, includes 2 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 9 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.
