The Mortmain cardigan was inspired by the author Dodie Smith (1896-1990), and it can be worn on its own or as a twinset with the Dodie sweater for maximum vintage appeal with a look that is both long-lasting and timeless. Mortmain is a quintessential yoked cardigan that is simple to knit, with two sleeve options and a body length that is easy to adjust. Mortmain is worked in the round from the bottom up. The sleeves are knitted separately before they are joined to the body at which point the yoke is worked. On a number of rounds at the centre of the pattern, three colours are worked on a round. These rounds can be worked either by knitting with three colours, or duplicate stitch can be worked after the knitting is finished to add the third shade.
Mortmain is knitted using Susan Crawford Excelana North Lightweight DK and is shown here in two colourways, using the same shades in different combinations;
Colourway One features Trefusis a deep, dark green as the main colour with the yoke also using Virginia, Sheffield Steel and Snowdrop.
Colourway Two features Virginia a striking art deco green as the main colour with the yoke also using Trefusis, Sheffield Steel and Snowdrop.
Yarn kits are available in eight sizes to 71-157 cm (28-62 in) chest and either short or long sleeve lengths as follows:
Kit Size One: To fit 1st size (Short Sleeve) (71-76cm / 28-30in chest) and includes 2 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 3 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.
Kit Size Two: To fit 2nd and 3rd sizes (Short Sleeve) (81-97cm / 36-38in chest) and 1st size (Long Sleeve) (71-76cm /28-30 in chest) and includes 3 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 3 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.
Kit Size Three: To fit 4th size (Short Sleeve) (102-107cm / 40-42 in chest) and 2nd, 3rd and 4th sizes (Long Sleeve) (81-107cm / 32-42in chest) and includes 4 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 4 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.
Kit Size Four: To fit 5th, 6th and 7th sizes (Short Sleeve) ( 112-137cm / 44-54in chest) and includes 4 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 5 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.
Kit Size Five: To fit 5th size (Long Sleeve) (112-117cm /44-46in chest) and includes 5 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 4 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.
Kit Size Six: To fit 8th and 9th sizes (Short SLeeve) (142-157cm / 56-62in chest) and 6th size(Long Sleeve) (122-127cm /48-50in chest) and includes 5 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 5 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.
Kit Size Seven: To fit 7th and 8th sizes (Long Sleeve) (132-147cm /52-58in chest) and includes 6 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 5 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.
Kit Size Eight: To fit 9th size (Long Sleeve) (152-157cm /60-62in chest) and includes 7 X 100g skeins of main shade plus 5 X 25g mini skeins in contrast shades.
