The Striped Sun Top is a closely-fitted halter neck top, which is knitted in a smooth cotton yarn, making it the perfect knit for summer days. It is a vintage style, inspired by an original pattern from a 1939 edition of Stitchcraft, where it was published in a single size. Susan's version first appeared in A Stitch in Time Vol 2, graded for six sizes. This latest update includes instructions for fourteen sizes, to fit 75cm (30") to 152cm (60") chest. This ribbed top is knitted in 1x1 rib, which is designed to stretch to fit the body, and so it is recommended to choose the size with a finished chest circumference of approximately 28.5cm (11") smaller than your own chest circumference.
Our yarn kit includes all the yarn you need to knit this timeless top. The Striped Sun Top is knitted in our Cotton Breeze fingering weight yarn, a 100% mercerised cotton yarn, chosen for its beautiful sheen and excellent stitch definition, mimicking the cottons available in the mid twentieth century. Cotton Breeze is grown and spun in Europe, to OEKO-TEX standards.
The sample shown here uses three bright shades of Cotton Breeze; Coral (A), Spearmint (B) and Bright White (C). We've also selected a classic nautical-inspired blue colourway, of Deep Navy (A), Arctic Blue (B) and Bright White (C). The pattern includes fourteen sizes to fit from 76-152cm (30-60 inch) chest, with the following kits available:
Four-ball Kit: To make 1st size (to fit 76-81cm / 30-32in) and includes 2 x 50g balls of Cotton Breeze Fingering Weight in shade A, 1 ball in shade B and 1 ball in shade C.
Five-ball Kit: To make 2nd-5th sizes (to fit 86-102cm / 34-40in) and includes 2 x 50g balls of Cotton Breeze Fingering Weight in shade A, 2 balls in shade B and 1 ball in shade C.
Six-ball Kit: To make 6th size (to fit 107cm / 42in) and includes 2 x 50g balls of Cotton Breeze Fingering Weight in shade A, 2 balls in shade B and 2 balls in shade C.
Seven-ball Kit: To make 7th-12th sizes (to fit 112-137cm / 46-54in) and includes 3 x 50g balls of Cotton Breeze Fingering Weight in shade A, 2 balls in shade B and 2 balls in shade C.
Eight-ball Kit: To make 13th size (to fit 142cm / 56in) and includes 4 x 50g balls of Cotton Breeze Fingering Weight in shade A, 2 balls in shade B and 2 balls in shade C.
