    • A very special project for our May in the Lake District knitting retreat - the Bluebell scarflette - I designed this scarflette to celebrate one of my favourite flowers which bloom at this time of year with the woodlands and parks of the Lake District awash with these delighful delicate blooms producing an intense indigo wash across the landscape.

Small scarves are a constant feature both in the knitting world and in mainstream fashion right now, and I'm enjoying both knitting and wearing these useful little items that ooze vintage vibes, but for this pattern I wanted to create something with a slightly different construction which would provide the knitter with some interesting techniques to try.

The scarflette is knitted in the round commencing with just a few stitches and a central steek, enabling every round to be knitted. Increases are worked on either side of the steeks stitches on every alternate round to create the scarflette shaping. When the main part of the scarflette is completed, the steek is cut open and the side edgings picked up and knitted before the top edging is then worked at the same time as creating additional ties.

The pattern has been written to enable the knitter to easily make the scarflette smaller or larger as preferred. this pattern introduces the knitter to a wealth of skills including knitting in the round, following a chart, colour dominance, yarn management, matching up vertical patterning, working a steek, using DPNs, reinforcing and cutting open a steek, picking up stitches and darning in ends.

Bluebell Wood is knitted using Susan Crawford Vintage Bluem Fingering, 100% Bluefaced Leicester wool, a delightfully soft and luxurious yarn, spun locally and dyed in-house at our Lake District studio.
