Join us in April 2026 for a relaxing four night knitting retreat in the heart of the Lake District at one of the most beautiful times of the year at “The loveliest spot that man hath ever found". We are again hosting our retreat in the village of Grasmere, in our private, quintessential, Cumbrian stone cottage. Situated seemingly in the middle of nowhere, but in fact only a short walk away from civilisation, Thorney How is the perfect location to sit back and relax in its tranquil location, nestled between the lakeland fells or to head out for a hike and be inspired by the colours, flora and fauna of the rugged Lake District landscape, or wander into the village for tea and scones or real ale at the local pub.
On the first full day of the retreat, Susan will host a full day workshop, introducing you to your bespoke colour work project, designed and created especially for the group by Susan and directly inspired by the beauty of the English Lake District. Our workshop will take place in the purpose built event room in the brand new annex of our gorgeous venue, with floor to ceiling windows looking out to the Lakeland fells.
We will spend time during the week exploring the local area with plenty of knitting time to continue working on your project and the opportunity to receive one-to-one guidance from Susan. A very special trip to our Lake District studio is included with a hand-dyeing demonstration and workshop hosted by our own amazing hand-dyer Charlie. During this workshop you will dye your very own 100g skein of sock yarn to take home with you as a reminder of your time spent with us. Our studio shop will be open exclusively for retreat participants to shop and take advantage of a 20% discount on all purchases. Plus our sample rails will be bulging with hand knits for you to try on to help you decide on your next project.
Throughout the retreat, we'll also have our Susan Crawford pop-up shop set up at Thorney How for you to browse or shop to your heart's content with Susan and the team on hand to help you with any questions you may have – all without needing to leave the comfort of the cosy retreat.
Each day, a hearty breakfast and dinner will be provided by our in house chef, focused on regional dishes and locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. The evenings will be spent knitting, chatting, quizzing and unwinding round the wood burning fire.
The retreat will run Monday evening to Friday morning with dinner and drinks on the first night, and breakfast on Friday morning before your departure. The price includes all trips, breakfasts and evening meals* at the retreat. We will also be hosting a range of activities during the week which are all included in the price - more details on these to follow soon. You will also receive a Susan Crawford goodie bag, all yarn and instructions for your bespoke colour work project, informal knitting sessions throughout the week and a full day colour work workshop with Susan.

This retreat is limited to only fourteen attendees so please book early to ensure your place on this very special holiday.
Resting on the outskirts of the village of Grasmere in Cumbria’s Lake District National Park is Thorney How. Thorney How is a characterful, large, stone-fronted property originally built in the 1600s. It welcomes up to fourteen guests across ten stunning, en-suite bedrooms – with three bedrooms on the ground floor and four rooms on the first floor of the main house. In 2025 further renovations were carried out to this beautiful property with the creation of an additional annex next to the main house. Three additional bedrooms have been added, plus a stunning events room for holding our classes. Thorney How is set in its own grounds down a quiet lane and has its own private car park. Internally it is decorated and finished to a high standard, with log burning stoves and comfy sofas for relaxed knitting.
There are ten rooms available at Thorney How, all furnished and finished to a high specification and with en-suite facilities. We have six rooms for single occupancy, all with double or king sizes beds and en-suite facilities with walk-in showers. The majority of the single occupancy rooms are situated on the ground floor of either the main house or the newly renovated annex which is directly next to the main building. The four twin rooms are each intended for shared occupancy but attendees should book per person unless booking for two people. These rooms come with twin beds plus en-suite facilities again with walk in showers. For further information please read the terms and conditions below.
