CC41 Sock Kit -
These fun socks are inspired by the ‘make do and mend’ campaign images of the early 1940s which are also used to great effect as the end papers in our final book, Good Evening, Mrs. Craven: The Wartime Stories of Mollie Panter-Downes. In addition I have taken inspiration from the wartime socks known as the ‘Wonder Socks’ which had detachable heels, toes and soles. These were created to enable worn-out parts of socks to be removed, re-knitted and replaced and to show how this concept works, I have created a removable toe section to your socks which means the toe can easily be replaced in its entirety if a hole develops. I hope you have fun with this fascinating technique!
The CC41 socks are knitted from the cuff down followed by a delightful 'wavy' fair isle pattern on the legs. A standard heel flap and gusset are worked next and then the foot which features a wee section of colourwork before casting off. The toe is then knitted separately after which it is joined to the foot
The pattern includes both written and charted instructions.
The CC41 socks are knitted used Wold 2ply a bouncy, warm 100% British wool which is just perfect for woolly socks. The socks use 6 colours in all and there are enough left-overs in each of the shades to knit extra toes for when the others eventually wear out!
Good Evening Mrs Craven: The Wartime Stories of Mollie Panter-Downes: reprints twenty-one short stories by Mollie Panter-Downes that were first published in The New Yorker between 1939 and 1945 and (with two exceptions) have never been reprinted - until now. In these stories Mollie Panter-Downes explores almost every aspect of English domestic life during the war: boredom, separation, sewing parties, fear, evacuees sent to the country and to America, obsession with food, the camraderie of the Blitz, and above all the social revolutions of wartime.
