Harrap

  • This pattern is currently only available as part of A Stitch In Time Volume 3 - The Colourwork Edition, which can be ordered by following the link above

Harrap is a stylish sweater with a repeating stranded colourwork motif with contrasting stocking stitch sleeves. It was first published as a single sized pattern in the 1940s by Harrap Bros., the founders of the well-known yarn brand, Sirdar. Like so many colourwork designs of this period, it is a great pattern for using up small amounts of yarn.

The original single sized version was knitted in separate flat pieces that were then sewn together; the new multi-sized version contains instructions for the pattern to be knitted in the round with steeks added at the armhole sections. In addition to the elegant long sleeved option shown, instructions are also provided to work Harrap as a sleeveless vest.

Harrap is knitted using Susan Crawford Fenella, a vintage 3 Ply weight wool, created to replicate the fine vintage yarns of this period. It is dyed in-house by Susan's daughter, Charlie, in a wide range of vintage shades. Harrap is shown here using shades; Balado as the main shade plus Charcoal, Myrtle, Jonquil, Cetraria, Rannoch, Caramel, and Chalk.

Our model Susan is shown wearing the 7th size to fit 107-112cm (42-44in) chest and is shown with 3inches (7cm) of positive ease and an unshaped welt.

The Harrap pattern has fourteen size options included to fit from 28-60 inches (71-152cm) and can be worn with zero to approximately 3in (7cm) of positive ease and contains both clear written pattern directions, together with charted instructions, plus a comprehensive schematic diagram and sizing chart.
