A Stitch In Time Volume 2 Revisited

    • The Tyrolean Jumper Coat pattern is a very typical interpretation of the traditional 'tyrolean' style of knitwear which became increasingly popular in the 1930s. This style features intricate twisting cables and surface embroidery. This particular pattern was first published in the 1950s and features a slightly longer body with a nipped in waist, a high neckline and a wider shoulder line than the patterns of the 1930s.

Embroidery of course features on this jumper coat - or cardigan - and is worked into the smaller diamond sections using any combination of embroidery threads of your choosing. The embroidery can also be omitted and the resulting cardigan remains extremely stylish.

The jumper coat is knitted in separate flat pieces and then sewn together. What was an extremely long pattern for just a single sized garment has been improved by charting the cable pattern which has enabled me to include instructions for sizes from 28 to 60 inch (71-152cm) chest as a result.

Tyrolean Jumper Coat is knitted using Excelana North fingering weight a soft, fingering weight 100% British wool, spun for us in nearby Yorkshire and dyed' in-house by Susan and her team. Shown here in shade French Rose, but we feel an alternative shade suggestion of Agapanthus would look equally stunning.

Our model Charlie is shown wearing the third size 92-97cm (36-38in).

The pattern includes instructions for nine sizes to fit chest measurements between 71cm (28in) and 152cm (60in) and contains both clear written pattern directions, together with charted instructions for cable stitche detail plus a comprehensive schematic diagram and sizing chart.
