    • Vaila is a recreation of an early twentieth century cardigan on display at the Shetland Museum and was recreated as part of The Vintage Shetland Project. Vaila is an elegant, slighty boxy cardigan with an all-over colourwork pattern enhanced by a deep moss (seed) stitch welt and button bands. A neat collar with shaped lapels adds to the tailored finish of this cardigan.

The main body is worked in the round from the bottom up with a centre front steek throughout and armhole steeks added after the underarm divide. The sleeves are picked up and knitted downwards. The front and neck bands are picked up and knitted with short rows worked to create the lapels and rolled collar. Shoulders are grafted together on a single colour pattern row. Crochet button loops are made at the edge of the front band after the rest of the garment has been completed. The sample shown in the photographs is the first size, worn with zero ease. However it is suggested you choose a size with 5-10cm (2-4in) of positive ease.

A yarn kit is available to accompany this pattern.

The pattern contains full colour charts plus comprehensive written instructions as well as a clear schematic diagram.
