This kit contains all the yarn you need to knit the innovative Tavis cowl and matching Steek hat.
Tavis is a highly unusual colourwork cowl with a tubular construction and a fascinating unique colourwork motif. Tavis is a tubular scarf with panels of colourwork amidst bands of stocking stitch commencing with a provisional cast-on and ending with a grafted seam but is knit simply in the round until being joined into a tube at the very end of the knitting. The colourwork pattern itself is inspired by the beautiful simplicity of steek charts used in circular colourwork knitting and in particular the very graphic steek chart of Hilda from The Vintage Shetland Project. I adapted these charts to create a colourwork pattern which creates the illusion of up to five colours in any one row, when in actuality, because of the construction method, there are never more than two colours worked in any one row.
The Steek hat has been designed from the same inspiration and has a highly unusual but interesting and fun construction process.
Tavis and Steek are knitted with Byre, a Fingering (4 Ply) weight yarn which is spun from 100% British wool at a nearby mill in Yorkshire. Byre is a very special blend of Jacob and Shetland fleeces spun exclusively for Susan Crawford Vintage, which creates a beautifully soft, airy, tonal, naturally grey yarn. This natural shade is called Dry Stone Wall and is one of the shades used in Tavis.
In addition this stunning yarn has been hand dyed by Susan and her team in four earthy shades to create the hues needed for this intriguing project.
These stunning hand dyed yarns have been hand dyed and finished in-house by Susan and her team; each shade inspired by the landscape both natural and agricultural, the buildings, the animals and the birds surrounding us in our little corner of the countryside in the North West of England.
This kit offer a considerable saving on buying the yarn individually. PLEASE NOTE THERE IS SUFFICIENT YARN INCLUDED IN THIS KIT TO ALSO KNIT THE STEEK HAT.
Your kit contains 5 x 100g skeins of Byre, fingering (4 Ply) weight yarn, a wonderful blend of Jacobs, white Shetland and black Shetland fleeces; 1 skein shows Byre in its beautiful undyed natural soft grey, with 4 more hand dyed skeins, one each of Loam, Gate Post, Clay and Rusty Tractor.
Please note this kit does not include the pattern. The pattern can be purchased separately or can also be found in my book, Evolution.
