Lanatus is the seventh design from my new book, Evolution, a collection of 12 designs inspired by The Vintage Shetland Project.

    • Lanatus is a lightweight, drapey, cool and easy-to-wear sweater featuring a stunning Fair Isle yoke, in a monchrome colour palette.

This sweater is knitted from the top down with short rows worked at the back neck before sections of colour work motifs are worked around the yoke. Between each section increases are worked until the yoke is ready to be divided into the body and sleeves.

Lanatus is extremely versatile. Once the yoke has been worked options are available to knit a plain stocking stitch lower body or work the entire garment in stranded colour work motifs. Likewise the sleeves can also be plain or patterned to match. Working from the top down means the body length can be adjusted to suit the wearer but I have provided two length options for both the plain and the patterned versions, offering a shorter and a longer option for each.

To create the soft airy fabric I have used increasing needle sizes as Lanatus is worked; with the final lower body section worked on 2 needle sizes larger than the yoke. This creates a beautifully draping fabric and a soft hemline.

To achieve this, Lanatus is knitted in Fenella, 100% British wool, a yarn which thickness-wise sits between 2 ply laceweight and fingering weight yarns. The yarn creates beautiful stitch definition when creating colour work, but knitted on larger needles, it also produces knits with movement and lightness. Available in 28 shades, there are so very many versions and variations that can be made using Fenella and the Lanatus pattern. The yoke would equally look wonderful worked in a multi-coloured version such as in Paterson, from where the motifs originate.

Lanatus includes instructions for ten sizes between 28 inch (70cm) and 66 inch (167cm) chest and contains clear written instructions and full colour charts, plus a comprehensive schematic diagram and sizing chart.
