    • The design inspiration for Cloudin comes from the delicate lace pattern which creates the fabric on Johnson in The Vintage Shetland Project. This motif though lacy still creates a robust fabric for a pair of socks. Susan resized the motif to create three sock sizes and an easily adjustable foot. The sole is knitted in stocking stitch to create a firmer fabric for underfoot.

The socks are named after Cloudin, a two storey farmhouse located on the island of Vaila off the west coast of Shetland. Cloudin stands close to the waters edge visible to boats passing by and even to the naked eye from the mainland on a good day. The roof features distinctive crowstepped gables which create the same sharp saw-like edges as the diamond motif.

The Cloudin socks are knitted in Susan's first ever true sock yarn, Bluem Sock, a blend of 75% Bluefaced Leicester yarn and 25% nylon. This blends creates a beautifully soft but strong material when your sock is knitted up. Susan has hand dyed the yarn herself. The shade used for Cloudin is called Foggy Morning, a tonal grey with clouds of almost-black lowlights drifting across the surface.

The pattern includes both written and charted instructions for the lace sections.

Susan is wearing the second size socks in the photographs.

The pattern includes instructions for three sizes.
