  • Traditional Rag Rugging Workshop

    Saturday 18th October, 10.30 – 3.30

Making tufted rag rugs is a traditional Lake District craft – a sustainable craft using fabric scraps and old clothing to provide colourful and practical floor coverings for the home.

In this full day workshop, rag-rugging expert Jill McCrink will introduce you to the methods she uses to create her unique rag rugs using a spring hook and 100% wool selvedge off-cuts from the UK blanket making industry.

You will be provided with all the materials you need to commence your own rug (including a spring hook and 2 balls of wool selvedge) and by the end of the day you should have mastered all the techniques you need to continue your rug in your own time, creating a sustainable heirloom inspired by local tradition. Additional balls of wool selvedge will also be available to purchase on the day to complete your rug.

What the class will show you:
Rag rugging techniques to make both shaggy and short shaggy rugs
How to use a spring hook
    Spacing of tufts
    Design elements to consider

    Materials include:
    Hessian mat
    Spring hook
    Wooden measure gauge
2 balls of wool selvedge (equal to approx. 500g of rag strips)

What you will need to bring:
    Sharp scissors

Participants will also receive 10% discount on all in-store purchases on the day of the class.

Price includes materials as listed above plus refreshments on arrival and during the day. Lunch is not included. The class takes place in our classroom at the Assa Marra Wool Studio. Disabled access is available to the classroom via a lift. Please let us know if you would like us to arrange access using the lift. There is a maximum of 8 students per class. This class is for adults only.

Payment in full is required when booking your place on the class.
